When people search for custom cardboard cutouts, they are often picturing any freestanding printed shape. In practice, cutouts are made from several materials β corrugated cardboard, foam board and PVC board β and each behaves very differently. Choosing the right one saves money and avoids a sagging display halfway through your campaign.
The three main materials
Corrugated cardboard
Layers of paperboard with a fluted core. Light, recyclable and economical, especially for large quantities of point-of-sale displays. Surfaces can show the fluting texture, and cardboard is vulnerable to moisture and bending over time.
Foam board
A lightweight foam core between two smooth facing sheets. It gives a flatter, cleaner print surface than cardboard and cuts into sharp, intricate shapes. Ideal for events, weddings and short-to-medium indoor campaigns.
PVC foam board (Forex)
A dense, rigid plastic board. Heavier and more expensive than foam board but far more durable, impact-resistant and suitable for repeated use or long-term displays.
Comparison
| Cardboard | Foam board | PVC board | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Print surface | Good, may show texture | Smooth, sharp | Smooth, sharp |
| Weight | Very light | Very light | Heavier |
| Rigidity | Moderate | Good | High |
| Moisture resistance | Low | Moderate | High |
| Typical lifespan | Short campaigns | Events, shortβmedium campaigns | Long-term, repeated use |
| Recyclability | Easily recyclable | Limited | Limited |
Which lasts longest?
PVC board is the most durable, followed by foam board, then cardboard. But βlongest-lastingβ isn't always the goal. If a promotion runs for two weeks, a durable PVC standee may be unnecessary. If a mascot will attend every school event for years, PVC is worth it.
Choosing by scenario
- One-day wedding or party: Foam board β crisp, light, great in photos.
- Large retail roll-out across many stores: Cardboard can be cost-effective and recyclable.
- Exhibition used at multiple shows: PVC board.
- Busy mall with children around: PVC board with a weighted base.
- Semi-outdoor areas: PVC board.
Sustainability notes
Cardboard is the easiest to recycle. PVC is less recyclable but lasts much longer, which can reduce waste if reused many times. Designing without dates or campaign-specific details helps any material stay useful for longer.
