A retractable banner stand is really two products in one: a printed graphic and a mechanical base. The graphic gets the attention, but the base decides how long the banner lasts, how stable it is and whether you can update it later. Here is what you need to know.
How the mechanism works
Inside the aluminium base is a spring-loaded roller. The bottom of the graphic is attached to the roller; the top is fixed to a rail. When you pull the graphic up and hook the rail onto the telescopic pole, the spring holds tension. When you unhook it, the spring gently rolls the graphic back into the base for storage.
Parts of a stand
- Base (cassette): Houses the roller and protects the graphic.
- Feet: Swivel or fixed feet that stabilise the stand.
- Pole: Usually a three-section telescopic or shock-corded pole.
- Top rail: Clamps or adheres to the top of the graphic.
- Carry bag: Padded bags protect the stand in transport.
Economy vs premium bases
| Economy | Premium | |
|---|---|---|
| Base | Lighter, thinner aluminium | Heavier, more robust profile |
| Stability | Suitable for occasional indoor use | More stable on smooth floors and busy areas |
| Mechanism | Basic spring | Smoother, more durable spring |
| Best for | One-off events, promotions | Frequent exhibitions, roadshows, permanent receptions |
Our premium roll-up range is designed for repeated set-up and pack-down.
Single-sided vs double-sided stands
Double-sided stands hold two graphics back to back, one on each face β ideal for the middle of a mall, lobby or hall. See the double-sided 85 x 200 cm roll-up.
How long does a retractable banner last?
With careful handling, a quality stand can serve many events. The main things that shorten its life are:
- Letting the graphic snap back into the base.
- Rolling the graphic back while it is dusty or damp.
- Leaving it in a hot car during summer.
- Using it outdoors in wind.
- Transporting it without a bag or with heavy items on top.
Replacing just the graphic
When your offer, branding or contact details change, you may not need a whole new stand. Depending on the base model, the graphic can often be replaced and fitted to the existing roller. This is especially cost-effective for premium bases. When deciding, consider:
- Is the base still stable and the spring still smooth?
- Do you know the exact size and model of the stand?
- Is the replacement worth the handling effort compared with a new complete banner?
Ask our team with photos of your existing stand and we will advise.
Set-up tips
- Place the base on a flat surface and swing out the feet.
- Assemble the pole and insert it into the base.
- Pull the graphic up slowly and evenly, and hook the rail onto the pole.
- Check the banner is straight and the feet are stable.
