Mugs & Drinkware: A Guide to Sublimation vs Screen Printing

Sublimation printing

Dye is infused into the mug's coating, so the design becomes part of the surface rather than sitting on top - this allows full-color, photo-quality designs and is dishwasher-safe when done correctly.

Screen printing

Ink sits on top of the surface - more cost-effective for large bulk orders with simple 1-3 color logos, but can wear with heavy dishwasher/scrubbing use over time.

Which to choose

  • Detailed, full-color, or photo designs -> sublimation
  • Simple logo, large quantity, tighter budget -> screen printing

Mug material note

Sublimation only works on mugs with a special polymer coating - not on plain uncoated ceramic - so this affects which blank mugs are usable for a given design.
