A media wall β also called a step-and-repeat backdrop β is the branded wall guests, speakers and VIPs pose in front of at launches, galas, award nights and press conferences. Done well, it puts your logo into every photo shared on social media and in the press. This guide covers the essentials of media wall printing.
What makes a media wall different from other backdrops?
A regular backdrop often carries one big design. A media wall uses a repeating pattern of logos so that no matter how a photo is cropped β tight headshot or wide group shot β at least one logo remains visible.
Choosing the size
| Width x height | Suits |
|---|---|
| 2 x 2 m | Individual and couple photos, small events |
| 3 x 2.3 m | Small groups, press areas, standard launches |
| 4β6 m wide | Red carpets, galas, large groups and multiple photographers |
Allow at least 2β3 metres of clear space in front for guests and photographers. For smaller budgets or spaces, a 200 x 200 cm roll-up can work as a compact media wall.
Designing the step-and-repeat pattern
- Alternate logos in a diagonal grid. This fills the wall evenly and looks balanced in any crop.
- Size logos for head-and-shoulders shots. Logos around 20β30 cm wide are typical for standard walls; spacing should allow a full logo beside every face.
- Keep the pattern going to the edges and floor. Partial logos at the edges are fine; gaps are not.
- Use a plain background colour. White or a solid brand colour keeps logos crisp and faces clear.
- Test crop. Place a person silhouette on the design and crop it like a phone photo to check logo visibility.
Sponsor tiers
For events with multiple sponsors:
- Title sponsor: Largest logo, repeated most often, or a hero position at head height.
- Gold/platinum sponsors: Medium logos alternating in the pattern.
- Supporting partners: Smaller logos, or a dedicated band at the bottom or side.
Always confirm sponsor logos are the latest versions and supplied as vector files.
Material choices
- Matte fabric on a tension frame: Glare-free, lightweight, reusable β see tension fabric stands.
- Pop-up frames with graphic panels: Quick set-up β see pop-up banners.
- Rigid boards: Perfectly flat surface for premium events β see custom printed backdrops.
Whatever the material, choose a matte finish. Our matte backdrop printing guide explains why.
Set-up and lighting
- Place the wall away from windows to avoid backlighting.
- Light it evenly from both sides.
- Add a floor marker or small carpet to show guests where to stand.
- Assign a photographer or host to guide guests.
Get more from your media wall
- Add the event hashtag in the pattern.
- Pair it with selfie frames or props for guests.
- Design without dates so the wall can be reused at future events.
