Designing a company stamp is a different exercise from designing a business card or letterhead — the print area is small, the ink spreads slightly on contact, and text that looks fine on a screen can turn into a smudge once it's actually stamped onto paper. Here's how to think through the layout before you send it to print.
Start with what actually needs to be there
- Company name — the anchor of the design; keep it in a clear, medium-weight font rather than a thin decorative one, since thin strokes are the first thing to blur.
- Logo — simplified where possible; a detailed multi-colour logo won't translate well into a single-ink stamp impression, so a simplified single-colour version of your mark usually works better.
- Registered address — include it if the stamp will appear on official paperwork; leave it off if the stamp is purely for internal approvals, since it's one less thing to keep legible in a small space.
Where TRN belongs
If the stamp is going to appear on invoices or receipts for a VAT-registered business, including the TRN directly on the stamp can save re-typing it manually on every document — though many businesses still prefer to print the TRN as part of the invoice template itself and keep the stamp focused on the company name, logo and 'Approved'-style wording instead. Either approach works; the main thing is deciding it upfront rather than reprinting later.
Layout order that tends to work
Logo or company name at the top (whichever is more recognisable at a glance), address or contact details in a smaller line below, and any functional wording — 'Received', 'Original', a date field — kept separate rather than crammed into the same line as the company details.
One design mistake to avoid
The most common issue with a first-time stamp design is trying to fit too much text into the available space. A stamp with six lines of 8-point text will always look busier and less legible than one with three clean lines — when in doubt, cut a line rather than shrink the font further.
