Acrylic has a clean, glass-like finish that instantly looks premium, yet it is lighter and more impact-resistant than glass. Combined with UV printing, it becomes one of the most versatile materials for signs, awards, desk displays and dΓ©cor. Here is how acrylic printing works and how to get the best result.
What is UV printing on acrylic?
UV printers jet ink directly onto the acrylic sheet and instantly cure it with ultraviolet light. Because the ink cures immediately, it sits sharply on the surface without spreading, producing crisp detail and vivid colour on a smooth, non-absorbent material.
Face printing vs reverse printing
| Face (front) printing | Reverse (back) printing | |
|---|---|---|
| Where the ink sits | On the front surface | On the back, viewed through the acrylic |
| Look | Slightly raised, tactile | Glossy, deep, protected behind the acrylic |
| Durability | Exposed to handling | Protected from scratches |
| Best for | Wall-mounted signs, displays | Premium signage, awards, reception signs |
The role of white ink
On clear acrylic, colours printed alone can look translucent, like stained glass. A white ink layer printed behind the colours makes them opaque and vibrant. Designers can also leave areas without white to create a deliberate see-through effect β for example, a logo that appears to float.
Clear, frosted and coloured acrylic
- Clear: Glass-like, modern, lets wall colour show through.
- Frosted: Softer, diffused look that hides fingerprints and glare.
- White or coloured: Solid backgrounds for bold branding.
- Mirror: Metallic, eye-catching effects for luxury dΓ©cor.
Choosing thickness
- Thin sheets suit table tents, small signs, keychains and inserts.
- Medium sheets work for wall signs, awards and tabletop displays.
- Thick sheets give a substantial, premium edge for reception signs and executive awards.

Design tips
- Supply vector logos for crisp edges.
- Decide early where you want transparency and where you want solid colour.
- Keep text away from edges where fixings or stand-offs will go.
- For reverse printing, remember the artwork is mirrored in production β supply it normally and let the printer handle it.
- Consider lighting: backlit acrylic signs need different ink density.
Frequently asked questions
Does UV print on acrylic scratch off?
UV ink bonds well, but face-printed signs can scratch with heavy handling. Reverse printing protects the print.
Can acrylic be cut into shapes?
Yes β laser or CNC cutting allows custom shapes and logos.
How do I clean printed acrylic?
Use a microfibre cloth and acrylic-safe cleaner. Our acrylic display maintenance guide explains more.
